Aerotech's new ACS series high performance rotary stages combine brushless, direct-drive motor technology and a directly coupled precision encoder for high performance/high throughput laser machining or conventional production and test applications. Available in nominal diameters of 100, 150 and 200 mm, each with various length options to suit output torque requirements, the ACS series features a clear aperture for product feed-through and the capability to be fitted with air operated collet chuck or gripper assembly for material handling and can facilitate wet laser cutting applications.
With its low inherent inertia and optimised motor design, the ACS series is capable of speeds and accelerations that are significantly higher than other competing technologies such as worm-wheel driven rotary stages. The direct-drive brushless motor and high-performance rotary encoder system are directly coupled to a common shaft with no gear trains or mechanical couplings as found on gear driven stages. Consequently there and no position error or dynamic performance problems caused by hysteresis, windup or backlash. The comparatively low height for the torque output also contributes to reduced stack height related errors in multiple stage assemblies. This advanced design yields a superior performance, greatly increased MTBF life expectancy and considerably reduced maintenance requirements making the ACS series perfectly suited to 24/7 production demands with an extremely competitive "true cost of ownership" and further benefits of higher throughput capability and increased production quality.
The ACS Series is available in three nominal diameters of 100, 150 and 200mm and available in various lengths to suit output torque requirements. Each model is available in two or three length options from 85mm to 185mm. Continuous output torque ranges from 0.4 Nm for the smallest size model to just under 25Nm with maximum speeds rated between 500 rpm (ACS200) to 800 rpm (ACS100). Accuracy and repeatability throughout the range is specified at +/-15 arc-sec and +/- 6 arc-sec respectively and positioning resolution, dependant upon multiplication factor, ranges from 0.18 to 18.0 arc-sec. Specifications for axial runout, radial runout and wobble vary for each model, the smallest boasting values of just +/- 15 μm for runout and +/- 10 arc-sec for wobble.
The ACS series rotary stage is specified with a choice of "ER" style collet or 3 Jaw Gripper depending upon stage diameter. ER8 collets are available on the ACS100 and ER25 and ER40 sized collets may be used on the ACS150 models. Depending upon the collet size, tube diameters from 0.2 mm to 30 mm can be accommodated. Both the ACS150 and ACS200 support 3 Jaw chuck grippers type 3J-12 and a 3J-25 gripper may be used on the ACS200. Both collets and grippers are pneumatically operated; collets are configured in "fail-safe" normally closed mode and grippers can be either normally closed or normally open. Grippers may be fitted with customised jaws to handle non-round profiles such as square or hexagonal bar stock. The ACS series includes an integral non-contact rotary union that ensures a lifetime of maintenance free operation. The ER25 collet also features an optional sealed "water-jacket" configuration for fluid delivery in wet laser cutting applications which are finding more frequent use with high powered laser machining techniques to help improve quality. Aerotech have selected the collet, gripper and rotary union components on the basis of their inherently low inertia and low friction characteristics, further improving system performance and allowing higher peak acceleration whilst reducing dynamic position errors.
The integral design of the ACS series includes all mechanical, pneumatic and electrical interfacing All models have an array of mounting holes to accommodate base mounting for vertical operation or side mounting for horizontal use.
ACS rotary stages are completely self-contained with motor and encoder feedback connectors integral within the housing keeping the overall footprint to a minimum. Stages may be used in single rotary axis applications or specified along with other linear and rotary position stages, automation systems, motion controllers and servo amplifiers from Aerotech. All standard or customised Aerotech systems are supplied complete with motor power and encoder cables, all performance and calibration related documents and a CD with complete interconnection drawings to help integrators with their own system documentation. In addition, all motor parameter set-up data for the software configuration file is included; with full technical support and product training always on hand, system commissioning is straightforward requiring little more than connecting cables and applying power before programming application software. These features are built into every Aerotech product ensuring that the true cost of ownership is extremely competitive.
