A better way to get news
For those of you who are not familiar with RSS - it is a means
by which publishers can alert their audience when new content
is available. As an RSS subscriber, you can use a web based program
(such as MyYahoo!) or a desktop program (such as Feedreader )
to efficiently view RSS feeds from your favorite publications
in one place. Some publications offering RSS feeds include the
Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and just about every
blog on the internet.
What Is an RSS feed and What do I Need to Read it?
An RSS feed (or more generally, a feed) is simply a subscription to updates from a Web site or Web page. Through this feed, you can be automatically notified as soon as updates are made. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. Technically and very simply, a feed is an XML file on each of these Web sites that is specially coded to list the latest headlines in a machine-readable format.
To read any syndicated feed, you will need an RSS reader client or aggregator or a web site (i.e., Yahoo) that supports the RSS feed format. Once you have that set up, it's as easy as copying and pasting the link into your reader. Detailed instructions follow below.
How is This Different Than E-mail?
First, you don't need to provide an email address to sign up. This will mean less email in your inbox. Second, the new information you receive is stored in and viewed from your reader and not your email client. Third, unlike email where all new email is displayed as one huge list, all your feeds are organized and independent of each other. Finally, feeds tends to be more timely and easier to glance over than surfing through your emails.
