Radiotherapy Patient Positioning

Smooth Motion as a Clinical Requirement

A patient on a radiotherapy couch feels every velocity ripple. The OEM building the positioning system needed motion smooth enough to keep a patient still and comfortable, precision tight enough that radiation reaches only the targeted volume and components that satisfy safety regulation.

A power-dense, slotless servo motor eliminates cogging and integrates a safety-rated absolute encoder, an incremental encoder and a power-off brake into one package. The Automation1 controller accepts multiple feedback sources, so the precision encoders on the machine report into one control loop. The motors are built for volume manufacturing under the quality standards a medical device OEM has to meet.
