Surgical Robotics Calibration

Knowing the Target Pose Better Than the Robot Does

Calibrating a surgical robot’s perception system means placing a sensor target in a known pose and knowing that pose precisely. The manufacturer needed six degree of freedom control of that target with nanometer-scale increments, an open control interface that accepts third-party calibration software and hardware that holds up in a 24/7 production environment on two continents.

A hexapod with certified performance provides minimum incremental steps of 20 nm in linear displacement and 0.04 arc seconds in rotation. The control system integrates the manufacturer’s existing calibration software and captures sensor target pose at high speed. The electromechanical design keeps preventative maintenance low, which is what a continuous production line requires from a calibration cell.
